“Point of Light” has Michael Burnham and Sylvia Tilly’s friendship continuing to soar to new heights. We are here for it. And as they so often do, the arrival of a child has complicated Tyler and L’Rell’s relationship.
This podcast episode includes references to zombie ants, Commander Tucker from Enterprise’s undercover work on Romulus, Tasha Yar’s death, and many celebrations of both Tilly and Mary Wiseman.
In Front of the Camera
- Shazad Latif is back as the weird Voq / Ash Tyler combination and we have real questions how they’re going to integrate this character back into the show. Well, integrate him back and also have it be interesting.
- Michelle Yeoh returns as Philippa Georgiou, now rocking it with the mysterious Section 31. While Joe loves Section 31, Jason is much more skeptical about its place in the Star Trek universe.
- We get to see Mia Kirshner again as Amanda, a character who we only saw briefly last season. Back on the Star Trek Discovery Season Two Trailer podcast episode, more Amanda was one of our hopes and dreams. So this is great news.
- Kenneth Mitchell, the fella who played Kol last season, comes back as his father Kol-Sha. This is definitely a fun thing.
- Bahia Watson as Tilly’s invisible friend May is back and just as outstanding as last week.
- We get more David Benjamin Tomlinson as Linus this week, which I’m not sure we really asked for as our feelings about him in “Brother” were definitely mixed. But in Point of Light? I’m kind of digging him.
- Alan Van Sprang as Leland, who we technically saw in this deleted scene from “Will You Take My Hand?“
Behind the Camera
“Point of Light” was directed by Olatunde Osunsanmi who has awed us repeatedly. Most recently in Star Trek: Short Treks Calypso, which we absolutely adored and found to be flawless. Before that, he was at the helm with last season’s “What’s Past is Prologue” and “The Butcher’s Knife Cares Not for the Lamb’s Cry.” When there is an amazing episode of Star Trek Discovery, Osunsanmi seems to be not far behind.
Writing credit for this one goes to Andrew Colville, who also is responsible for writing the teleplay to the ominously titled “An Obol for Charon” next week. Sean Cochran from last’s week’s episode “New Eden” served as story editor. Kirsten Beyer was executive story editor on this week’s episode, whose work we’ve also experienced in last season’s “Si Vis Pacem, Para Bellum.”
